Logistics provider National Retail Systems Inc. launched a zero-emission electric drayage operation for Ikea Distribution Services North America in Los Angeles.

The converted Navistar Class 8 drayage tractor runs on electric charge, eliminating the use of fuel, and has a range of up to 100 miles, NRS said.

“We are excited to work with Ikea in rolling out zero-emissions electric drayage trucks in Los Angeles and hope that the operation is a success,” NRS Chief Operating Officer Raymond Wisniewski said.

The electric tractor will be used to move Ikea containers from the Port of Los Angeles to the NRS yard. The truck eventually could handle round trips from the NRS yard to any Ikea store in the L.A. market, the company said.

NRS said it updated its infrastructure to accommodate the electric vehicle, including building energy-charging stations.

TransPower, based in Poway, California, said it converted the tractor to use a battery-electric propulsion system.
