Murder Suspect Sought by Police

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation says a man wanted for murder may be hiding out at truck stops near the Alabama-Mississippi border and may try to solicit rides from truck drivers.

Police say Mario Centobie, 32, was seen at a truck stop near Oxford, Ala., Oct. 9 following his escape from Etowah County jail in Gadsden, Miss.

Mr. Centobie, who was serving a 40-year sentence at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Jackson for assault and kidnapping, had been taken to the Etowah County jail in preparation for a court hearing. He escaped after he overpowered a sheriff’s officer who was taking him to the hearing.

He fled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., where he shot a police officer during an altercation. At gunpoint, he then ordered a young man in Alabama to take him back to Mississippi, where he shot and killed a police officer in Moody, Miss.

Police said Mr. Centobie is considered dangerous, and they are asking truck drivers to be on alert.

e is described as a white male with brown hair, 6-feet 2 inches tall, and weighing 190 pounds. His facial hair varies, police say.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call 911 or contact the Etowah County Sheriff’s office at 256-549-5904.
