More Drivers Granted Vision Waivers

Thirty-four truck drivers will receive waivers from vision requirements from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which also proposes to exempt 62 more.

The exemptions enable drivers to qualify to haul interstate commerce without having the full vision acuity in both eyes required by regulations, a spokesman for FMCSA’s Office of Bus and Truck Standards and Operations said after the April 17 announcement.

Operators of commercial vehicles must have a minimum of 20/40 vision in each eye. The law allows those who have impaired vision in one eye to apply for exemptions if they meet the vision standard in the other eye.

The drivers must also have safe driving records — no serious citations or accidents — for at least three years before their applications for waivers.
