Will big wheels keep on turning for Alabama’s defending Grand Champion?

That is what an estimated field of 120 competitors will find out when the Alabama Truck Driving Championships are held May 31 in Pelham.

Who: Winners from nine categories at the state level have advanced to the national competition, where a Grand Champion will be crowned



What: Contestants are judged on a written examination and their driving skills

Mark Knight of AAA Cooper Transportation will be back to defend his Grand Champion title and will compete in the Twins class. He won the 5-Axle division last year on the way to taking top honors and earning a trip to the National Truck Driving Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

FedEx, UPS, Walmart Transportation and AAA Cooper Transportation are the largest entry carriers, with several fleets entering three to five drivers.

The event, which will be staffed with more than 40 volunteers, will be staged at the Pelham Civic Complex for the fifth straight year after being held in Bessemer for more than 15 years.

All drivers who compete have accumulated millions of safe driving miles.
