Manufacturing activity in the Chicago area expanded at a slower pace in January, the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago said Jan. 31.

ISM’s business index declined to a reading of 59.6 from 60.8 in December. Readings more than 50 indicate expansion.

Economists had forecast a decline to 59, Bloomberg News reported.

Chicago is a major center of U.S. manufacturing, which is one of trucking’s largest and most important customers.
