Maine, Missouri Legislators Review Bills That Would Keep Drivers’ Hands on the Wheel

The issue of driving and dialing at the same time has popped up in two more state legislatures, as Missouri and Maine lawmakers consider bills that could prohibit or restrict the in-vehicle use of cell phones.

Missouri state Reps. Marsha Campbell and Roy Holand introduced a bill that would restrict the use of wireless telecommunications devices unless they are of a hands-free design. The restriction would not apply to use of citizens band radios, nor would emergency or law enforcement personnel be affected. If the bill is adopted, violators could face a Class B misdemeanor charge — if involved in an accident, a Class A misdemeanor.
