LTL Carriers Ask Review Of Safety Expectations

A trucking group wants the Department of Transportation to take a second look at its estimates of the amount of lives its overhaul of hours-of-service regulations would save.

DOT estimates its proposal would result in 98 fewer deaths and 2,514 fewer injuries for an annual safety benefit of $558 million.

The Distribution & LTL Carriers Conference of American Trucking Associations is worried that many of the 49,000 drivers, who DOT estimates would be needed to make up the 586,000 miles lost by enforcing the proposed 12-hour limit on driving, will be inexperienced and younger than those drivers currently hauling freight.

“Research shows that novice and younger drivers have more accidents than experienced drivers, are involved in more fatal accidents and have riskier driving behavior, notwithstanding training,” the conference director, Kevin Williams, wrote in his letter to DOT.
