Letter to the Editor: Electronic Onboard Recorders

Click here to write a Letter to the Editor.

s the owner of a very small expedited trucking company, I am very concerned about the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration possibly requiring electronic onboard recorders.

I am sure the larger fleets, like FedEx, Werner, etc., will be able to afford the necessary investment in technology and equipment. But what will happen to small companies, which with today’s operating costs are pretty much living hand to mouth with very little left on the plate?

Will we be driven out of business by the technology and equipment costs?

How will independent contractors comply? Will the company have to pay for their units and make sure the unit is returned if the contractor leaves? Will the contractor have to purchase his/her own unit?

What if a truck is rented to cover a shortage? Will that truck have to have an EOBR?

What size trucks will be required to have an EOBR? Will all commercial vehicles need one?

I still have more questions about EOBRs, but I don’t want to take up unnecessary space. But I do fear that those of us with small fleets will not be able to afford the investment.

I believe the FMCSA should look at possible annual revenue breaks, as the Department of Transportation does for hazardous materials permits. I like the business I’m in and don’t want to be driven out by unnecessary costs.
