Letter to the Editor: Cargo Security

s a cargo crime investigations company — and a member of the Transportation Claims, Loss Prevention and Security Division of American Trucking Associations’ Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council — we are particularly concerned with security in the transportation industry.

Since most cargo theft cases involve unattended loads, we know that this is already a tough problem for many carriers to handle. It seems to me that the new driver hours rules may force carriers to drop loads in unattended locations more frequently, thereby leaving them more vulnerable to theft.

Not only is this a bottom-line and insurance issue, it can be a national security issue as well, depending upon the load. Nobody seems to be addressing this concern. Perhaps it should be considered.
