No date has been set for the initial meeting of a House-Senate conference that is to decide whether to stop funding for the proposed hours-of-service rules from the Department of Transportation.
The Senate has selected its members from its transportation panels to serve on the joint committee with the House, which is expected to choose its representatives this week.
Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Senate Transportation subcommittee, will head the joint committee. Its job is to resolve differences in the transportation spending bills that were passed earlier by both chambers.
The final legislation that emerges will be voted on by the full Congress before it is sent to the White House. While the Senate version of the legislation cuts off DOT money for concluding the hours of service rulemaking, the House-approved contains no such provision.
