merican Trucking Associations said Thursday its preliminary July for-hire truck tonnage index rose 0.7%, following a revised decline of 0.4% in June.

The gain put the seasonally adjusted index at 113.4 or 1.6% below the same month last year. The not seasonally adjusted index dropped 8.7% from June to 109.1.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello attributed the increase to gains in retail sales and increased manufacturing activity.

"Tonnage volumes increased nicely in July,” Costello said, “but the industry has yet to fully recover from the large decrease in volumes during the first quarter of the year."

ATA’s economics department calculates the monthly index based on surveys of its members.
