The price of goods imported to the United States rose 1.7% in January, the Labor Department said Friday.

Export prices rose 1.2%, the biggest monthly increase since 1989.

The import price increases were led by energy and food prices, Labor said. Prices excluding petroleum gained 0.6%.

The gain followed a revised 0.2% decrease in December.
