Indiana Truck Parts Factory to Remain Open

A truck parts maker has decided to keep a northern Indiana factory open after announcing last month that it would be shut down, the Associated Press reported.

Company officials said the Gunite Corp. factory in Elkhart, Ind., will stay open to help meet an increase in orders made since the beginning of the year, AP reported.

A Teamsters union official said some of the plant’s 180 workers still will be laid off, although the factory’s owner, Evansville-based Accuride Corp., did not give specifics.

The factory makes wheel systems and components for heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks. It had about 500 workers until job cuts began in 2006, AP said.
