Idaho Eyes Fees on Out-of-State Truckers

Two Idaho state senators want to raise an additional $57 million per year — largely from out-of-state truckers — to build and repair state roads, the Associated Press reported.

The move is part of a push to ease a $200 million shortfall in the state’s transport funding, AP said.

Republican Sens. Tim Corder, who owns a trucking company, and Shawn Keough introduced the bill Wednesday to charge all trucks that weigh more than 60,000 pounds a $660 annual registration fee, AP said.

Truck owners would then pay 4.5 cents for every mile they travel on Idaho roads, the measure states. Corder said the current system lets out-of-state truckers drive Idaho roads without paying the full cost, AP reported.

Corder said the Idaho Trucking Association, which represents long-haul truckers, is likely to oppose the measure, AP reported.
