House Bill Would Extend Size, Weight Limits

A House bill would freeze the truck size and weight limits of 53 feet for trailers and 80,000 pounds for the entire national highway system.

Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) introduced the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act, or SHIPA, last week.

Currently, size and weight limits are frozen on interstate highways, but states can make adjustments to the limits on non-interstate roads.

The bill would extend the interstate highway freezing to the entire 161,000-mile National Highway System.

The bill was co-sponsored by 48 other representatives and referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
