egional less-than-truckload carrier G.I. Trucking Co. said it planned to raise its rates by 5.9% on June 1.

The company said in a statement that the increase would "help cover significantly increased costs in health and liability insurance and make new investments in technology and equipment."

It said 2004 will bring "many challenges" to trucking companies — both LTL and truckload — due to new federal hours-of-service rules for drivers, tightened rail capacity and a potential driver shortage.

TL carrier FedEx Freight said Monday it planned to raise rates by 5.9% on June 14, and LTL carrier ABF Freight System Inc. said May 19 it would raise its rates, also by 5.9% on June 14.

G.I. Trucking, based in Brea, Calif., is ranked No. 89 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian trucking companies.
