Freight Express Lifts Amtrak Revenues

Amtrak beat its business plan by more than $2 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2000, the quasi-public corporation announced Jan. 23.

For the first quarter, the passenger railroad had total revenue of $476 million, up 8% from the first quarter of fiscal 1999.

The company reported that its express shipment business, which is competitive with trucks for time-sensitive goods, was up 55% to $5.4 million.

The plan, adopted by the Amtrak board of directors in 1998, to meet the congressional mandate that the railroad become self-sufficient by 2003, has been exceeded in two consecutive years.
