Trucking industry veteran Tommy Barnes has been named president of Project 44, a Chicago-based transportation technology startup that enables shippers and carriers to exchange data on freight rates and service through a secure Internet connection.

Barnes served as president of multimodal brokerage for Con-way Inc. and most recently headed the less-than-truckload business unit of Coyote Logistics.

Project 44 co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Wally Ibrahim said hiring Barnes “is a strategic move” for the company. “Tommy brings a wealth of industry experience and extensive leadership to the table, which will propel Project 44’s technology services throughout the industry,” Ibrahim said.

Barnes will work with Chris Helton, who recently joined Project 44 as chief operating officer after a career with business consulting firm Accenture. He will be tasked with further developing the company’s portfolio of freight API products and forging partnerships with other technology platforms.

“Project 44 is an emerging brand,” Barnes said in a statement. “I feel this technology, paired with intelligent leadership and deep industry knowledge, is going to transform what we know about freight transportation.”
