FMCSA Weighing Whether ID Requirements Are Burdensome

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is asking for public comment on the practice by some state and local governments of requiring trucks to display decals or other kinds of identification.

American Trucking Associations told FMCSA last year that such requirements in New York City, Cook County, Ill., and New Jersey are burdensome to the trucking indus-try.

ATA contends that the 2005 federal highway reauthoriza-tion prohibits such identification requirements.

In New York City, for example, trucks that accumulate half their mileage in the city must pay a tax and are required to display a decal that identifies them as subject to the tax.
