he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will allow truckload carrier Werner Enterprises to continue to operate its paperless log system, which is based on Global Positioning System technology, for another two years, the agency said.

The decision, which went into effect last Thursday, grants Werner an exemption from an FMCSA regulation that requires carriers to submit handwritten records of duty statements.

Werner has been using Qualcomm GPS technology to generate its record of duty logs since 1998 when the carrier entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with FMCSA.

The terms and conditions for the exemption are the same as those proposed in FMCSA’s Dec. 11, 2003, notice and request for comments, which were based upon conditions in the revised MOU, the agency said.

Werner ranks No. 6 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.
