FMCSA Publishes E-Log Rule

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has formally published its proposal that will require all interstate truck drivers to use electronic logging devices.

In a March 28 posting in the Federal Register, the agency said it will accept public comment on the proposed rule until May 27.

The agency has said that it will not be able to meet a congressional mandate to issue a final rule by Oct. 1 due to a need for notice and comment on the proposal.

FMCSA said its proposal, which will enforce hours-of-service rules, will eliminate driver harassment and diminish paperwork burdens. The mandate to equip trucks with the devices will take effect two years after the agency issues its final rule.
