FMCSA Grants Extension on Drug, Alcohol Clearinghouse Comments

The time period for commenting on the proposed rule for the national clearinghouse for driver drug and alcohol test results has been extended through May 21.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration granted the extension at the request of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

Congress in 2012 ordered FMCSA to come up with the rule, and FMCSA published its proposal in February, saying it would allow a 60-day comment period that was to have ended April 21.

The proposed rule would require employers to check the clearinghouse before hiring a driver. Employers also would be required to check the records of their drivers once a year.
