The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration denied an exemption application from a group seeking to tint truck windows more than federal limits allow.

FMCSA said in a June 11 Federal Register notice that the International Window Film Association failed to provide evidence that motor carriers operating trucks equipped with tinting that blocks more light than currently permitted will achieve a level of  safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, complying with the regulation.

FMCSA also said current rules “ensure a necessary degree of transparency in motor vehicle windows for driver visibility.”

The association’s request contended that greater levels of tinting can reduce drivers’ eye strain and the heat load of the interior environment, thus making the driver more comfortable while lowering energy used for cooling.
