FMCSA Delays End of ‘Registrant-Only’ Numbers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it will delay its elimination of “registrant-only” U.S. Department of Transportation numbers given to commercial vehicle owners that are not in business as carriers.

FMCSA said it will implement the change in September 2012, a year later than the date originally planned.

FMCSA wants to eliminate the numbers because they make tracking carrier safety violations difficult for the agency. The Truck Renting and Leasing Association asked FMCSA to push back the date but has said it did not think eliminating the numbers alone would solve the problem.
