First Atlantic Hurricane Forms; Unlikely to Affect Gulf Oil Platforms

The first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season formed Monday, but forecasts put it on a track that would not affect Gulf of Mexico oil platforms, the Associated Press reported.

Hurricane Bertha was about 900 miles east of Puerto Rico and on a northwest track toward Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm’s wind speeds strenghtened to 90 miles per hour, and more strengthening was possible expected in the next two days, AP said.
