Feds Poised to Fix Y2K Snags

Instead of singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight, teams of federal government staffers will be poised to pounce on any significant computer problems that arrive with the millennium.

The feds will be prepared to help from Dec. 28 through Jan. 4, whether the problems stem from the Y2K rollover at the end of the month or any other source, said Janet Abrams, executive director of the President’s Council on Y2K Conversion.

She said local problems will be handled by agencies in that area, with assistance from state governments when necessary. Her team will have representatives from federal agencies working around the clock to resolve problems of national significance.

Details of the Department of Transportation response plan as well as other government preparations were spelled out at a Dec. 1 meeting at the agency’s headquarters.
