FedEx Freight, the less-than-truckload unit of FedEx Corp., said Monday it will implement a 6.75% general rate increase, effective Sept. 6.

This increase applies to FedEx Freight in the lower 48 United States and Canada, FedEx said in a statement.

The rate for cross-border FedEx Freight shipments between the U.S. and Mexico will also increase 6.75% for just the U.S. portion of the shipment, also effective Sept. 6.

The move follows average 6.9% rate increases announced recently by LTL competitors YRC Worldwide, UPS Freight and Con-way Freight.

FedEx previously announced increases to shipping rates for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground, which were effective Jan. 3, 2011.

FedEx Corp. is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
