FedEx Expands Hours, Reworks Corporate Order

FedEx (FDX) is reorganizing its hours of operation for the public and its internal corporate structure in an attempt to reap premium prices from procrastinators and find a home for newly acquired American Freightways (AFWY).

The corporation’s FedEx Express air delivery service will extend its deadline for accepting parcels for delivery by up to three hours in some major markets starting Feb. 26. Called FedEx Extra Hours, the new feature will start in 90 major U.S. cities, 14 in Europe and Toronto.

The premium service commands a premium price. FedEx will charge the tardy an extra $15 above its normal rates for using Extra Hours. “We have lines of people coming in late, late, late at night who will do just about anything, and pay a lot of money to ship things today,” FedEx Express Chief Executive David Bronczek told Bloomberg News.

According to a Jan. 23 statement from the company, the packages will move through FedEx’s existing network, but on a different sort cycle.
