FedEx Corp. is ramping up efforts to improve efficiency of its FedEx Express vehicle fleet.

FedEx announced a new goal of increasing vehicle fuel efficiency in its Express unit by 50% by 2025, from a 2005 baseline. The company reached the former goal of a 30% increase in efficiency in 2015 and hit 35% in the year ending last May 31.

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The new goal was contained in the Memphis, Tenn.-based company’s 2017 Global Citizenship Report, released the week of April 10.

“FedEx is committed to advancing our vision of practical sustainability,” said Mitch Jackson, vice president for environmental affairs and sustainability. “Thanks to the innovation and commitment of our team members, we’re changing what is possible and making our goals a reality.”

The company has achieved a 22% reduction in aircraft emissions intensity since 2005, moving toward a goal of 30% by 2020, spokeswoman Rae Lyn Rushing said.

A continuing modernization of the aircraft fleet helped save 153 million gallons of jet fuel during the last fiscal year. The company aims to obtain 30% of its jet fuel from alternative sources by 2030 and anticipates the first delivery of such fuel in 2019.

• FedEx invested more than $46 million in charitable contributions in 97 communities, and FedEx team members volunteered more than 93,000 hours in more than 500 cities.

• Customers who sought information about the company’s corporate citizenship and carbon emissions data as part of their purchasing process accounted for $6.7 billion in revenue.

• FedEx operating units, including Express, Ground and Freight, avoided more than 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions through fuel and energy saving initiatives.
