FedEx Ground will build a 300,000-square-foot distribution center in Baltimore at the Tradepoint Atlantic transportation and manufacturing hub on the site of a former steel mill, the developer announced.

Tradepoint Atlantic said FedEx Ground is slated to be the first tenant and open its distribution center in August 2017. FedEx Ground has added 11 major hubs since 2005. Approximately 150 jobs will be created at the new location. The project supplements FedEx's service in the Baltimore area that includes two other locations.

Tradepoint intends to develop the 3,100-acre site of the Sparrows Point steel mill that was closed for good two years ago. The developers hope to capitalize on the location that includes interstate highway, rail and water access.

“As evidenced by our record holiday shipping season, our company is growing,” said Kevin Koken, vice president of Eastern Region Operations for FedEx Ground. “This new facility will help us meet the increasing demand for our services, which is largely fueled by the surge in e-commerce — not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.”

FedEx Corp. ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

“Having such a prestigious tenant sign a long-term lease at the site demonstrates the economic impact Tradepoint Atlantic will have for the region,” said Michael Moore, the developer's CEO. “As we continue to bring jobs and redevelop the site, we will be known as the premier facility on the Eastern Seaboard and a true world-class center for business and trade.”
