EPA Sets 2009 Renewable Fuels Standard

The Environmental Protection Agency set its renewable fuels standard at 10.21% for 2009.

The standard, published in the Nov. 21 Federal Register, is intended to lead to the use of 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuel in 2009, including 500,000 gallons of biodiesel and renewable diesel.

The 10.21% standard is calculated as a percentage of the amount of renewable fuel to be used, divided into the total annual gasoline expected to be used in 2009.

Publication of the renewable fuel standard, a requirement of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, is applicable to refiners, importers and certain blenders of gasoline.
