All major U.S. heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers said they have submitted applications to the Environmental Protection Agency for certification of their 2007 models and expected to have the new, cleaner-burning engines available for sale by the beginning of next year.

Representatives of Cummins Inc., Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks, Caterpillar Inc., International Truck and Engine Corp. and Detroit Diesel Corp. told Transport Topics last week they were “in the process” of gaining EPA approval to sell their 2007 model-year engines, while Freightliner LLC said in an Aug. 24 statement it too had begun the certification process.

However, Roger Gault, technical director for the Engine Manufacturer’s Association, said, “Everybody has a high degree of confidence that they will have their certifications soon; whether or not that’s a mislaid confidence remains to be seen.”
