The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Oct. 28 issued an “information collection request,” seeking public comment on its plans to ask electronic logging device manufacturers to register and self-certify that their products meet the agency’s technical specifications.

The agency, which published a supplementary proposed ELD rule March 28, is expected to issue its final rule next year that will require most interstate carriers to equip their trucks with ELDs.

“The FMCSA will maintain a list on its website of the current ELD providers and devices that have been certified [by the providers] to meet the technical specifications,” the registration announcement said. “The information will be necessary for fleets and drivers to easily find a compliant ELD for their use in meeting the FMCSA regulation requiring the use of ELDs.”

FMCSA estimated there will be 22 respondents to the registration request, 20 domestic and two foreign ELD vendors, and that each will register an average of four devices.

The agency is accepting comments until Dec. 29. For more infomation click here.
