Durable Orders Rise in June

Gain Beats Economists’ Forecast
Durable goods orders rose in June, the Commerce Department said Friday.

Durables orders in June rose 0.8% after a revised 0.1% gain in May that was larger than initially reported, Commerce said.

Excluding volatile transportation orders, bookings for goods meant to last several years gained 2% — the biggest gain of 2008 — following a 0.5% drop in May, Commerce said.

Economists had expected a decline of 0.3%, Bloomberg reported.

Durable goods include large items like refrigerators and air conditioners. Trucking is a major beneficiary of durable goods manufacturing, hauling both components and finished goods.
