Durable Goods Orders Rise 2.1% in June

Orders for durable goods in the United States rose 2.1% in June, which was the largest increase since January, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

The increase in orders made to last at least three years increased to $172.5 billion, following little change in May. Excluding transportation equipment, orders gained 1.4%, after rising 0.9%.

A rise in orders would increase the amount of goods produced by U.S. factories for shipment by truck.

Shipments of durable goods rose 1.3% in June after rising 0.1%.

Economists expected durable goods orders to rise 1.1%, Bloomberg said.

Orders for transportation equipment gained 3.9% after falling 2.1% in May, Commerce said. Bookings for motor vehicles and parts jumped 2.2%.

The report also found that orders for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft, a proxy for future business investment, increased 0.6% last month after increasing 0.5% in May.
