The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index for August was flat compared with a year ago, DOT said Wednesday.

The freight TSI rose 0.4% in August from July level, following two consecutive monthly declines, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

For the year through August, the freight TSI was up by less than 0.1%. It had been down 0.3% through the first seven months of the year, but the August increase from July turned the index slightly positive year-to-date.

TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
