The Department of Transportation has scheduled a May 6 webinar to update the public on the progress of a study that looks at safety implications related to the size and weight of trucks.

The webinar will be held on May 6 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET. Click here to register for the webinar.

The 2012 transportation law MAP-21 requires the department to produce a study that looks at the safety risks, infrastructure impacts and the effects of enforcement between trucks operating at or within federal limits and trucks that legally operate in excess of such limits.

In a March 31 letter to the chief of the Federal Highway Administration, the Transportation Research Board took issue with the study’s concept, noting, “The primary difficulties in projecting the consequences of changes in truck size and weight limits are that the available methods have significant weaknesses and that uncertainties that are small in absolute terms can have large consequences for the net impact of the regulatory change.”

Feedback from stakeholders and TRB’s review of the study are expected to play a role in the shaping of a highway bill that would update MAP-21, which expires in September.
