DOT Sets $21 Million for Hazmat First Responders

The Department of Transportation said Monday it was handing out $20.9 million to states to help train first responders dealing with hazardous materials incidents.

“This program strengthens local emergency response capabilities and serves a vital role in a comprehensive hazmat safety program,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

“Although prevention is our first priority, preparing communities to respond effectively to incidents that do occur is essential to protecting the safety of all Americans.”

The grants, which will be issued by DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, will be “funded by user fees paid by shippers and carriers of certain hazardous materials,” DOT said.
