he average nationwide price of retail diesel fuel rose 2.3 cents to $2.472 a gallon, the Department of Energy reported Monday.
Meanwhile, unleaded regular gasoline's price rose 1.6 cents to $2.336 a gallon, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.
Diesel's uptick followed last week’s 3.6-cent decline, which had followed a 4.3-cent jump, the most since a record 34.6-cent leap on Oct. 3 to a then-record $3.144 a gallon. Diesel hit an all-time high of $3.157 a gallon on Oct. 24.
Since dropping 8.9 cents on Nov. 21 to $2.513 a gallon, the average price of trucking’s main fuel has risen six times and fallen three times, according to DOE figures.
The diesel price was 51.3 cents higher than a year ago and 84 cents above this time two years ago, according to DOE figures.
Regional diesel average prices rose in all five regions. In California, which DOE breaks out separately, which rose 7.1 cents to $2.674, the highest reported price.
The West Coast was the highest for a region, gaining 4.3 cents to $2.608. The Midwest saw the smallest rise of 1.5 cents to $2.423, the lowest regional price.
Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
