The average retail price of U.S. diesel fuel rose 3 cents $2.835 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday following its weekly price survey.

The upturn was the second straight following two declines and was the fourth gain in the past 10 weeks, according to DOE figures.

The price rose 1.3 cents last week, following a 0.7-cent dip two weeks ago and a decline of 1.8 cents three weeks ago.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 2.7 cents to $2.982, the first time in seven weeks the price has been below $3.

Gas has fallen 23.6 cents over the past five weeks from an all-time record high of $3.218 set on May 21 and is now 11.3 cents over the same week last year.

Diesel is now 3.2 cents below the same week last year and 4.2 cents below this year’s high of $2.877, set on April 16.

Trucking’s primary fuel is now 42.2 cents over this year’s low of $2.413, set on Jan. 29.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
