Diesel Fuel Rises 4.1 Cents to Record $2.053 a Gallon

he average retail price of diesel fuel in the United States rose 4.1 cents per gallon to $2.053, a record high, the Department of Energy reported Monday.

The price, a third straight weekly record, is 60.8 cents higher than the same time last year, a 42% increase.

The trucking industry burns an estimated 650 million gallons of diesel fuel each week, equating to $395 million more in fuel costs for the same week this year over last year.



DOE also said Monday the average U.S. retail price for regular gasoline rose 2.1 cents to $1.938 a gallon, the third straight increase.

Gasoline is 36.5 cents higher than a year earlier. Trucking uses about 290 million gallons of gasoline each week.

The price of diesel rose by about 6 cents throughout the country, rising by 6.88 cents in California to $2.29 a gallon, the highest price in the nation.

Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel-filling stations to compile a national snapshot price.
