Diesel Engine Update: Some Carriers Are Warming to ’07 Models

While other carriers were debating whether to buy even one Class 8 truck with a 2007 EPA-certified engine, Mike Hasinec at Penske Truck Leasing Co. was knee-deep in testing 2007 engine performance.Hasinec, Penske’s vice president of maintenance systems and support, and his crew began evaluating and testing preproduction ’07 engines as early as October 2005, running over-the-road applications and short hauls with various customers. Hasinec also worked closely with suppliers, providing feedback on component changes and design issues pertaining to the placement of new particulate traps and other applications.Apparently, the effort paid off. “With all the engines we’ve been running,” Hasinec said, “we haven’t seen any issues we’d consider alarming.” As a result, Hasinec said, Penske Truck Leasing plans to purchase 7,000 to 9,000 Class 8 trucks with 2007 engines from various manufacturers — including International Truck and Engine Corp. and Freightliner LLC — during this year, as both attrition and new business demand.For the full story, see the Feb. 5 print edition of Transport Topics.
