The average national retail price of diesel fuel fell a half-cent to $2.863 a gallon, the Energy Department said Monday.

The price left trucking’s main fuel 16.4 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 3.6 cents to $2.749 a gallon, the fifth decline in six weeks, following last week’s 1.4-cent increase.

Gas has fallen in 11 of the past 14 weeks and has steadily fallen from its record price of $3.218, set May 21.

The diesel downtick follows a 2.1-cent gain last week and a 5.1-cent decline two weeks ago that was the biggest one-week dip since January.

The average price for trucking’s main fuel is now just 3.5 cents off the year’s high of $2.898 set three weeks ago and 45 cents higher than this year’s low price of $2.413, set on Jan. 29.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
