Diesel Dips 0.1¢ to $3.308

Gas Falls 1.8¢ to $2.98 in Sixth Straight Decline

The average price of retail diesel fuel fell 0.1 cent from a week ago to $3.308 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Wednesday.

The decline marked the fourth straight since diesel peaked at an all-time record $3.444 a gallon on Nov. 26. Since then, trucking’s main fuel has declined 13.6 cents.

Regular gasoline, meanwhile, fell 1.8 cents to $2.98 a gallon, marking the sixth straight decline since gas hit $3.111 on Nov. 12, the highest in five months.

Average diesel prices fell in three of five national regions — the East Coast, West Coast and Rocky Mountains — while rising in the Gulf Coast and Midwest.

Only the Rocky Mountains saw a change of more than a penny, dropping 5.1 cents to $3.266 a gallon, according to DOE figures.

The department released the price survey on Wednesday this week because of the Christmas holiday.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
