U.S. retail fuel prices rose last week, with diesel gaining 3 cents a gallon, on average, while gasoline added 8.3 cents, the Department of Energy reported.

The Feb. 16 price report was the second straight weekly increase for diesel and the third for gasoline. Prices for the two refined products started extended major slides in the fall, but for now they seem to have halted.

DOE’s Energy Information Administration said the diesel average was $2.865 a gallon Feb. 16, and gasoline stood at $2.274.

Diesel gained 0.4 cent the previous week, while gasoline has gained 23 cents in three weeks.

Both fuels still are well below their peak prices over the past 12 months. Diesel hit $4.021 a gallon March 10, and gas hit its high of $3.713 on April 28.

EIA usually reports prices on the same day of its surveys, but because of Presidents Day, the Feb. 16 prices were not reported until the following day.
