HL is planning to open a chain of retail outlets in the United States to compete with rivals UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp., the Financial Times newspaper reported Wednesday.
The Germany-based company believes it needs U.S. stores to gain customers from its two main competitors, FT said.
John Pearson, vice-president of DHL’s commercial operations, told the paper that the company had not yet decided how many stores it would open but said the number could reach into the thousands, the paper reported.
DHL, a unit of Deutsche Post, has gained about 10% of the U.S. package-delivery market since its $1 billion of Seattle-based Airborne two years ago, the paper said.
DHL Americas is ranked No. 4 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers. UPS is No. 1 and FedEx is No. 2.
