DHL Buys Stake in Miami Air Cargo Firm

DHL has bought a 49% stake in a Miami air cargo company and extended its contract with the company through 2019, the company said.

Terms of the investment in Astar Air Cargo were not disclosed, though DHL said its recent investments in aviation — including in Polar Air Cargo — will help it expedite its U.S.-Asia air shipments.

Astar operates a fleet of 44 aircraft. DHL has contracted with the company since 2003.

Separately, DHL said Wednesday it opened a new international air gateway in northwestern Mexico, offering service from Hermosillo, Mexico, to Phoenix.

DHL Americas is ranked No. 4 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
