DHL Airways Names O’Gorman New CEO

DHL Airways, the U.S. airline that participates in the DHL Worldwide Express network, has named Joe O'Gorman as its chairman and chief executive officer.

O'Gorman has spent much of his career with United Airlines (UAL), from which he retired in 1997. Besides serving as executive vice president of operations for United, he has been chief executive for Aloha Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Evergreen International.

"I am looking forward to developing a first-rate airline that will not only service the U.S. needs of the DHL Worldwide Express network, but will also grow and provide U.S. air cargo customers a high-quality service option," O'Gorman said.

Last week, DHL Worldwide Express and DHL Airways asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to dismiss petitions filed by United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx (FDX) to revoke DHL's U.S. operating authority.

The rival companies believe that because DHL Worldwide is partly owned by Germany’s Deutsche Post, it violates U.S. law on airline corporate parentage.
