Deck Truss Design Recommended for Ore.-Wash. Bridge

State transportation officials in Oregon and Washington are recommending a deck truss design for a new Interstate 5 bridge planned to span the Columbia River between Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., the Associated Press reported.

The $340 million design is the cheapest of three alternatives remaining after the two states’ governors abandoned other plans, citing concerns about cost and construction dangers could not be overcome, AP said.

The design recommended Friday is expected to look a lot like the open-web box girder concept tossed out on Feb. 3. A final recommendation will come in mid-March after a chance for public review, AP reported.
