aimlerChrysler, parent of leading U.S. truck maker Freightliner LLC, said Tuesday it will restructure its management and will rename its commercial vehicles division under the name Truck Group.

The Truck Group will include units Trucks NAFTA, which includes Freightliner, Sterling and Thomas Built Buses; Trucks Europe/Latin America, which includes Mercedes-Benz trucks; Mitsubishi Fuso Bus and Truck Corp.; and Truck Product Creation.

Germany-based Daimler said in a statement on its Web site that it planned to cut about 6,000 administrative jobs, about 20% of its worldwide work force, to save more than $1 billion a year. Most of the streamlining will be in Germany.

“Our objective in taking these actions is to create a lean, agile structure, with streamlined and stable processes that will unleash DaimlerChrysler’s full potential,” said Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche.

Daimler said Monday it sold a record number of commercial vehicles last year. (Click here for previous coverage.)
